The next designer of iPhones, iPads and emerging technology in general has been the goal of Engineer Alivia Grate ever since she was exposed to an engineering department at the University of New Haven by her Math Teacher at Hillhouse High School!
That early exposure to engineering has fueled Alivia to achieve greatness in a field dominated by men. I asked Alivia who inspires or who she views as mentors? “I have mentors in all aspects of my life, not just professionally or for school. It’s good to network and to meet people, young and old, that you can look up to and aspire to be like.’
Being equipped with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Connecticut and a Master of Engineering in Systems Engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology, has allowed Alivia to showcase her talents and hone her skills at prestigious companies like, Eversource, General Dynamics Electric Boat, Alion Science and Technology, and TTM Technologies, Inc.
Alivia’s love for Engineering has led her to sit on many leadership boards and affiliations such as UCONN chapter of NSBE and the Electric Boat Management Association, in which she served as an active member in both organizations. If that isn’t enough, Alivia has found a way to give back by serving as a mentor and motivational speaker to introduce young girls in Connecticut, as well as college students at the University of Connecticut, to the STEM field.
Currently working towards her second master’s degree (MBA in General Management from the University of Connecticut) leaves little time for Alivia to engage in outside activities. Alivia shared with me “As of right now, I don’t have time for much outside of work, school and trying to maintain a social life. I have found enjoyment in activities that were easy to incorporate into my daily life because they are necessities. I like to work out and I like to cook.” Sounds like a woman focused and on a mission!
Over the next 5 years, Alivia plans on dedicating and developing herself personally and as an engineer and then use that to leverage herself into a better opportunity and who knows, maybe an engineering project manager for the next generations of Iphones and Ipads! Stay tuned!
